Branding SharePoint Online Sites

In this article, we will learn how to apply branding to modern SharePoint online sites using Site themes.

In SharePoint online environment, we can easily modify the look and feel of sites including logo, colors and navigation without even writing a single line of code. Branding can be applied at site level, or group of sites or to all sites withing the organization.

Site Branding

Site Branding can be controlled using Site themes and Site designs. SharePoint provides various default site themes using which are responsive in nature, using site themes we can customize the logo and color to match the brand. Site designs provide specific layout and other functionality. Additionally we can create Custom Site themes and Custom Site designs. Custom themes let us create additional color schemes. Custom Site designs let us control the site theme and additional customization like navigation, default applications and other settings.

Default Site Themes

Following are the predefined themes SharePoint offers out of the box.

Select a default theme

  1. To select the default theme click on settings and then select Change the look option.
  2. Select the theme and click on Save.

When you choose the theme, the theme is applied instantly so that you get the preview of the selected theme.

Custom Site Themes

SharePoint themes are stored in a JSON object. Following are the steps to create the custom theme.
  1. Create JSON theme object. You can make use of Online Fabric UI theme generator tool.
  2. Apply theme using PowerShell, RestAPI or CSOM.
  3. Once, theme is applied you should see the custom theme listed under Company themes section in theme menu.

  4. Select theme and click on save to apply the theme for your site.
